Overview of the United Soccer League (USL)

The United Soccer League (USL) is at the heart of American soccer. The USL has a presence in over 200 communities across the United States and is the first and only soccer organization in the U.S. to establish a pathway from youth to professional levels for both men and women within a single ecosystem. This structure includes three professional leagues: USL Super League (women), USL Championship (men), and USL League One (men); two pre-professional leagues: USL League Two (men) and USL W League (women); and two youth platforms: USL Academy and USL Youth.

Authentic, vibrant, and exciting, the USL aims to provide an inclusive and unforgettable soccer experience for players, fans, and communities in our growing “soccer nation.”

Program Purpose

Under the guidance and mentorship of USL executives, the USL Work Experience Program (UWEP) offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sports management within a professional sports league. UWEP participants work on various strategic projects and initiatives, gaining practical experience with league personnel and member clubs.

Participants will be assigned to a specialized department where they will have direct responsibilities but will also interact with all league departments, including Business Development, Digital Media, Club Services, Analytics, and more. The ultimate goal is to provide students with comprehensive, hands-on experience in the sports industry.

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the USL Sporting team, the Sporting UWEP will assist the department in multiple functional areas of USL operations. The participant will play a key role in data analysis and research related to player development and talent identification.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key tasks include (but are not limited to)

  • Supporting the USL’s sports strategy by collecting and analyzing player statistics within the Women’s Pathway of USL.
  • Preparing for talent identification (USL W League & USL Academy) through sports research and data analysis.
  • Assisting in sports communication, and planning/execution of webinars focused on player development within the USL.
  • Attending sporting department meetings as scheduled.
  • Conducting sports research and creating scouting reports using Modular-11.
  • Supporting the USL Pre-Professional Scouting Networks (Women’s Pathway) for USL League Two and USL Academy by reviewing, analyzing, and managing data.
  • Reviewing previous match footage to evaluate player performance and conduct statistical analysis.
  • Assisting in the development of a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) clinic through event planning and community outreach.
  • Participating in various sports initiatives, tasks, and research projects as required.
  • Supporting other departments and operational areas as needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of sports industry work.

Qualifications

  • Participants must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field and must be able to earn academic credit from an accredited college or university for their participation.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are essential.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic are a must, with a “team-first” mentality and a willingness to learn.
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented, with a focus on quality and consistency.
  • Ability to work under fluid deadlines and complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of the sports/soccer industry is preferred but not required.
  • While participants will complete the Work Experience Program remotely, they must have access to a computer or laptop with a reliable internet connection.
